Sigma Gamma Rho is a non-profit organization that aims to enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadership development and the education of youth are the hallmark of our organization's programs and activities. Sigma Gamma Rho addresses concerns that impact our society educationally, civically, and economically.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated was founded on November 12, 1922 on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana by seven schoolteachers.  Initially proposed for females interested in the field of education our Seven Pearls, Mary Lou Allison Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Dulin Redford, Bessie M. Downey Martin, and Cubena McClure saw fit to expand the organization to all women who are interested in every phase of education.  From that moment until this, the organization has bloomed into a community-oriented sisterhood with over 90,000 women.  These women excel in all areas of life holding to true to their Sorority’s motto “Greater Service, Greater Progress.”

Sigma Gamma Rho has more than 400 Undergraduate and Alumnae chapters throughout the United States, Bermuda, the Bahamas, and Africa. The sorority is a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), an umbrella organization of nine international Greek letter sororities and fraternities. With this said it is clear that we support and encourage all members of Greek life.  We promote Greek unity, and are proud of the successes experienced by other Greek lettered organizations.

Sigma Gamma Rho houses an elite class of ladies who are firsts in their career fields and various professions.  This is signified in the establishing of the organization on a predominately Caucasian campus during a time period in which it was considered dangerous and unwise for African-Americans to meet collectively in a private group.  Sigma Gamma Rho is the first and only sorority NOT to be found on the campus of a historically black college.

Sigma Gamma Rho’s greatness is embodied in its distinctively selected mascot and flower.  The French Toy Poodle and the Yellow Tea Rose truly represent all the unique qualities that form the sisters of and in Sigma.  The Poodle is credited for its superior intelligence, stunning beauty and wide-ranging ability.  The Poodle like the Sigma woman has the potential to excel at anything that she puts her mind too. Now the Yellow Tea Rose is one of the more fragrant flowers in the Rose family.  This too is similar to a Sigma woman whose very essence is so fragrant that she commands respect and attention upon entering a room.

Sigma women also carry canes as a trademark of authority, trendsetting and influence.  Our colors are Royal Blue and Antique Gold  which showcase our nobility and exclusivity.  For more info, Please visit our National website: www.sgrho1922.org.
